What is diabetes?

Diabetes is a condition characterised by high blood glucose levels, resulting from the body's inability to produce and/or use insulin. There are four main types of diabetes, including:

  • Pre-diabetes – occurs when a person begins to develop diabetes-like symptoms, including elevated blood glucose levels and reduced insulin sensitivity.
  • Type 1 diabetes – occurs when the body is unable to produce insulin.
  • Type 2 diabetes – occurs when the body still produces insulin, however this insulin is ineffective in maintaining blood glucose levels in the body.
  • Gestational diabetes – occurs when growth hormones released by the placenta impair the normal functioning of the mother’s insulin.
